The Learning Pit!

It has been a very busy week. We have started to explore new subjects in Maths and Science, as well as revising what we have learned in booster groups. It was the perfect moment to remind us all about the challenge of learning.

We have been exploring the visual metaphor of The Learning Pit to remind us all of the struggle and mistakes that are an inherent aspect of learning. Children who develop understanding of the learning process are able to recognise when learning is hard - similar to being in the pit. More importantly, they can articulate what skills and strategies they need to use to get out of it.

We will be keeping pictures of The Learning Pit on our desks and we will continue to use them to help support learning.

The picture below will help you to explore the idea at home.

English

During English, Year 5 have been planning and writing stories while also learning how to edit and improve their writing.

Children in Year 6 have been gathering information to write a newspaper report based on the animation Rucus.

Both of the groups have worked really hard improving their grammar and spelling.

Maths!

Children in Year 5 have begun learning about geometry. We have learned how to use a protractor and calculate angles of a triangle, straight line and a circle. At times we felt like we were ‘in the pit’ but by the end of the week we started enjoying our new challenge.

Children in Year 6 have been exercising their brain’s with algebra. We have been generating and describing liner patterns.

Science

In science we have started an interesting new subject. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be learning about living things and their habitats. We have already begun classifying different species and researching the characteristics of a mammal.

History

Children in 6KM have been exploring the cities conquered by Alexander the Great. We have explored how the Greek empire was established.
