SUBJECT ORGANISATION

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1 there are daily discreet phonics sessions which are taught in ability groups. The Letters and Sounds Programme is used at Ash Croft and at Cottons Farm. Children have daily English lessons following the Talk for Writing Programme. The vocabulary, grammar and punctuation statutory requirements are taught within these lessons using the No Nonsense Programme from Year Two. Children take part in both whole class and individual reading sessions and have regular story times and reading for pleasure sessions to develop a love of reading. Discrete handwriting sessions are delivered. English skills are developed across the curriculum. Provision is made for children who require extra support through focussed intervention programmes.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2 Children have daily  English lessons following the Talk for Writing Programme. The vocabulary, grammar and punctuation statutory requirements are taught within these lessons using the No Nonsense Programme. Additional English sessions include whole class and individual reading, handwriting and reading for pleasure. English skills are developed across the curriculum. Provision is made for children who require extra support through focussed intervention programmes. This includes additional phonics support for those Year 3 children who failed to meet the required standard in the Phonic Screening Check retake in Year 2 and other pupils who continue to struggle to decode in Key Stage 2.

A mixture of Talk for Writing  working walls, toolkits and displays can be seen in the classroom or communal areas. These reflect the aims of the schools in the promotion of English, by being interactive, using literary language and by reinforcing objectives taught.

Many exciting and rewarding activities are arranged within the Federation to promote the pleasure and knowledge that can be gained from books, e.g. ‘Book Week’. Book Weeks include visits by published authors, skilled story tellers from many cultures, performances by professional theatre groups, making books, using drama, dance and music to illustrate texts.  Links with the wider Community are made to enable children to have  more opportunites to read. Such as using PGCE students volunteers to read with targeted pupils or Derby County Primary Reading Stars programme of support.
