The Mathematics teaching within the Federation is based on the 2014 New National Curriculum.

The main aim of this is to raise standards and expectations across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The curriculum sets out three broad aims to develop:

  1. Fluency (rapid recall of facts and competency in performing a range of calculations);
  2. Mathematical reasoning;
  3. Problem solving.

The mathematics curriculum covers key areas: Number and Place Value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals and percentages, measure, geometry, algebra, ration and proportion and statistics.

There is a big shift towards mathematical reasoning and problem solving and this will be reflected in the Year 6 assessments from 2016, with the majority of marks being awarded for questions which involve these skills, not just basic calculations.

Across the Federation we have a “can do” approach where children are encouraged to have a positive attitude towards maths. Maths lessons provide children with opportunities to apply their skills and knowledge based on real life problem solving situations. Mathematical thinking is developed through discussion; this helps children to approach problems with an open mind and to understand that some problems have more than one answer.
