Gurdwara Trip

Lesson: Religious education

Class: Ash Croft - Fantastic Foxes Year: 2017 - 2018

Fantastic Foxes and Marvellous Monkeys have spent the Autumn term learning all about Sikhism. We have learnt about the 5 K's - Kesh, Kanga, Kara, Kirpan and Kachera. We also learnt about Sikh celebrations - Diwali (Bandi Chor) and Vaisakhi. On Friday 1st December, both classes went on a trip to visit the Gurdwara. The lady at the Gurdwara recapped our learning on Sikhism and let us see and touch the 5 K's. We were also lucky to walk around the rooms inside the Gurdwara and see the special areas where Sikhs pray and worship God. The lady taught us how Sikhs are named when they are born - the Guru opens their special book called the Guru Granth Sahib Ji and whichever letter appears first, the child's name begins with this letter. The parents' first gift to their child is a Kara which Sikhs wear at all times to protect themselves and remind themselves that God is always with them. The langar is a place where Sikhs volunteer and cook food to feed Sikhs as well as any homeless people for free. Children absolutely loved trying the food - they even licked their plates clean! Have a look at the photos to see what a lovely time we all had.
